Pena - Sorry

Me apenan

------------

I'm sorry
not for the things you don't like about me
and you'd like to change,
but for the things I don't like about me
but I still can't change.

Algo Mal - Something Wrong

----------------------------------

If we plan to do ten times what is possible, we do five times what we can, and in the end we feel bad because we've done only half of what we've planned, then there's something wrong with the way we plan things.

Demonios - Demons

-----------------------------

I’m not afraid of blood; I see it often coming out of me as part of a natural cycle. I’m not scared of pain; I know life brakes through painfully. For me, a good cry is as healing as a good laugh; it cleanses everything, with or without a friendly shoulder to cry on. I pay attention to my nightmares; they usually reveal something important about what I’m going through. I rather see my real face in the mirror, no make-up, no anti-age lotion, even if I put on a mask for everyone else. I know rage doesn’t solve any problems, but rather go through it, have my blood boil, scream and pull my hair, throw something against the wall and break it. Fighting my demons is better than pretending they’re not there. I know they will forgive me in the end, as I forgive them.

Anima

The alarm sounds. Everybody gets ups but Anima is still sleeping. Anima dreams and when she’s tired of dreaming she wakes up, rests in bed for a while savoring her last oneiric moments, and after stretching for a few minutes she gets up. Instead of coffee, Anima makes hot chocolate. She doesn’t dress up, she has breakfast in her pajamas and goes out to the garden to play with her pet, who bites her sleepers until it manages to steal them. She goes back into the house shoeless and instead of listening to the news on the radio she plays music and starts dancing, and by doing so, her body wakes up too. Anima makes a few bitter mates and once she’s hungry she prepares an appetizer with whatever there is in the fridge, salty and sweet, and of course a little glass of wine. She goes out to have lunch at the garden again, and her pet sits next to her paying attention to any crumbs that may fall on the floor. The sun on her face and the wine appease her soul, and so Anima stays there for a moment, sitting, not doing anything, enjoying the birds singing and listening to the music that comes from inside her. After a while, Anima goes back inside and starts to play, to paint, to write, to think, all of the sudden stops to catch a memory that appeared, and then continues creating, transforming, singing, and dancing a little more; she abstracts herself, she connects with herself, and an eternity goes by in an instant until she realizes that is dark outside. Anima lights a few candles and some incense, changes the music and her clothes; she dresses warmly and goes outside again. Now, the crickets sing; Anima lights her pipe filled with chocolate tobacco and her pet looks from the distance. Anima puts some branches together and lights a fire. The hot charcoal of the dying fire will cook the meal later on. Anima shares her plate with her pet; for dessert, they collect some wild fruits that grow by the backyard fence. After this, Anima goes back inside the house, back in her pajamas, back in her bed, and rests while she imagines things, expectant to know what adventures await in her dreams tonight.

Deseo - Wish

--------------------------

May these holidays and the new year bring you balance between accomplishing your plans and being open to what life offers you, between the satisfaction of things happening the way you wanted and learning from mistakes, between enjoying company and having time by yourselves, between tranquility and adventure, between work and rest, between dreaming and keeping it real, between being correct and defiant, civilized and wild, reasonable and passionate. May you find personal success and solidarity; may you enjoy health in your body and in your soul; may you surround yourselves with beauty without closing your eyes to the realities of this world. May each of us have freedom to be who we want to be, and tolerance to coexist no matter how different we may be from each other.

Peace for everyone.

Intentando - Trying

Sigo intentando.

------------------

I don’t have love for those who don’t have love for me.

I won’t hate them; I just won’t expect to be loved by them anymore.

I don’t have time for those who don’t have time for me.

I won’t reject them if they come looking for me, but I won’t chase them either.

I don’t have appreciation for those who don’t appreciate me.

I won’t put energy in sending them bad vibes, but I won’t waste my good vibes in them.

I don’t have patience for those who are not patient with me.

I won’t put pressure on them, but I won’t wait either.

I don’t want to suffer for those who don’t care for me, although sometimes I do; I wish I didn’t.

I keep trying.

Multidimensionales - Multidimensional

Somos seres multidimensionales.

Somos portales a otras dimensiones.

--------------------

We are multidimensional beings.

We have agreed that here’s an infinite universe outside of us, but there’s another one just as big, or bigger, inside; at least one for each person. When we close our eyes, we can see it. When we close our ears, we get to hear it. When we’re asleep, are we? Aren’t we waking up to this other universe instead.

We are doorways to other dimensions.

We can be asleep and quiet in bed, and totally awake and active in our dreams. Is someone else sharing this other life with us? Are be sure that this dream is only a personal experience? I have dreamed of past lives; I have had entire relationships with unknown people; I have spoke languages in my dreams very fluently, but I can’t seem to remember how to do it once I’m awake; I’ve been to places and lived experiences that affect my life just as much, if not more, than my experiences being awake.

Which one is the dream and which one the awakening?

The artistic creation of my own universe is not a creation at all; it’s the manifestation in the “real” world of this other very real universe that lives in me, it is an effort to express that other world in this one. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating because the more comfortable I feel in my own universe, the more I let it appear in my real life, the less comfortable I feel in this life we’ve all agreed to call reality. On the other hand, my own little world helps me in the struggle for making sense.

I experience something wonderful when I see how much that other world helps me communicate and relate to other people in this one. It makes me believe that perhaps these other worlds we have inside have more in common that we’ve been trained to think.

Control

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of the best things in life happen when we’re completely out of control: a truthfully artistic creation, an exquisite dream, a unique idea, to irrevocably fall in love, an absolute rage, a good laugh, even a better cry. That doesn’t mean the idea is to stay out of control all the time; on the contrary. But what if, every once in a while, we let go of the illusion that we can understand it all just because we can make a clumsy effort to enclose the incomprehensible into words; if we abandon the farce that we can explain the most beautiful metaphors; if we forget the deception of classifications; if we give up obsessive planning for everything; and let ourselves go...

Conmigo - With Myself

Otras me entretienen, y muchas me sorprenden.

----------------------------

Some people escape from themselves. They try to get distracted so that they don't find themselves in their own company. Maybe they don't like how they are, or even worst, they have avoided themselves for so long that they became complete strangers. Such a pity, because perhaps if they gave themselves a chance, they might like who they are more than they expect.

I, however, without really knowing why, enjoy the company of all the people that live in me. Some bother me from time to time, but I learn from them. Others entertain me, and many actually surprise me. The truth is I like being with myself.

Nostalgia

--------------------------------------------------

Nostalgia is when I start missing things I used to take for granted; when almost unnoticed things I’ve seen and heard all my life countless times, start calling me little by little, and make me cry; or when all that used to be just everyday normal things, brings me memories and reminds me of me. I suddenly need all those things, to keep being myself... but now I can't seem to find them that easily.

Arte - Art

-----------------------------------------------------

Art gives me a perfect balance between escaping reality and letting the world overwhelm me. The alchemy of transforming shit into beauty: a hopeful metaphor; a healing experience. That's exactly the reason why it saddens me to see it confined to exclusive venues for exclusive people. It would be wonderful that art becomes a part of everyday life, available to anyone who wishes to enjoy it. That way, I’m sure, the world would be a little better.

Libres - Free

----------------------------------------

A long, long time ago, animals used to be free.

Why did we take the right to imprison, tame, and exploit them?

Shouldn't they be able to come and go, hunt, pasture, run, rest, procreate, socialize, play and fight as they please, no confined space, no leash, no saddle, no bridle, no whip, no cage, no corral, no barbwire fence, no walls to separate species, no owner, no license number, no microchip under the skin?

Perhaps animals want to be free again.

Perhaps people too.

Guardiana

-------------------------------------------------

“Guardiana of Mother Nature’s Children’s Souls”

As an artist, I always find inspiring and enriching to accept a challenge. This altar has been a challenging piece not only because it is my very first altar but also because the tradition of Day of the Dead is foreign to me.

At the same time, the celebration of our dead feels stirring and inviting. What attracts me the most from this holiday is the acceptance of the duality in things. Life contains both decay and renewal; therefore Death is a natural part of it. More so, Death doesn’t have to be always sad, or dark.

A Guardiana (female guardian or keeper) seemed perfect to represent that duality, because Guardianas are protecting and inspiring beings, delicate but strong, serious but also playful. They are the keepers of both earthly and spiritual things.

I developed a first idea for my altar but, just like Death, the facts of Life have a way of happening beyond our control, and when I was right in the middle of my work, the Station Fire took over the mountains in my neighborhood. And so it was that this event disrupted our daily lives and changed the theme of my piece: I decided to honor all the kinds of Life lost in the fire.

Interestingly enough, during the research process for my piece, I came across lots of local vegetal and animal species that I had no idea were also my neighbors; Death sometimes opens our eyes to the Life around us, and helps us appreciate it a little more.

I offer Mother Nature some water as I hope for rain, and some seeds as I hope for new plants and trees to grow so that, in this never-ending cycle, life will spring again from the ashes.

Quiero Decir - I Mean

-----------------------------------------------------

“I want to take care of you,” said the Corporation to the People, and got permission to exploit them.

“I want to help you,” said the First World to the Third one, and made sure it never became independent.

“I want you to be successful too,” said the Bank to the Poor, and forever collected the benefits of interest.

“I want to protect you,” said the Developed to the Developing, when in fact it meant “I want to control you.”

“I want to make sure you never ran out of resources,” said the Big Man to the Little ones, and put them to work for him to build machines to tear the trees down and drill the ground and steal the minerals and the water and the food and the animals and bombard the moon and exhaust the atmosphere and manipulate the wind to keep on living his very comfortable Way of Life happily ever after.

Libros y Gente - Books & People

-----------------------------------------------

Books are like people: the space they occupy in the world doesn't have any relationship with the universe they hold inside. Most times I can't know what's inside by looking only at their appearance; it can take me a while, and some work, to really get to know them. Sometimes they seem fun and trendy, almost with perfume, with their dancing letters and their overwhelming colors, but I need only to read the first words to recognize they are nothing but that: a little noise with not much to say. Fortunately, every once in a while I might find one that looks very common or boring, or too old and outdated, or falling apart, almost decrepit and with a funny smell, but that one can be the one that will allow me to enter a fascinating and unexplored universe, every time I open it.

Mercedes

Una gran tristeza siento

Enorme como tu voz

Tu voz que es tierra y viento

Tu voz que es montaña y mar

Tu cantar maternal

Que ama y se deja amar

Mujer latinoamericana

Voz de algarrobo y trigal

Raíces fuertes, sublimes ramas

Río que nutre el continente

Voz de la Pachamama

Que canta a sus hijos, su gente

Que canta al sol y a la luna

Que canta como ninguna

Voz que a veces me duele

Y tantas veces me cura

Voz poderosa y fuerte

Voz de cálida ternura

Voz de sólida garganta

Voz del corazón, del vientre

Mercedes, tu voz aun me canta

Pero te extrañaré siempre.
